Christmas Valley is a quaint small town with 1,300 residents tucked between sand dunes, craters, and pockets of volcanic glass. This is an amateur geologist’s paradise! Just west of town you can explore Fort Rock, an imposing rock formation where archaeologists found sagebrush sandals estimated to be 10,000 years old, making this one of the earliest inhabited sites in North America.  If you are a hiking enthusiast and want to explore unique terrain, Crack-In-The-Ground is a must-see. The two-mile-long trail here descends 70 feet into a rock fissure for a one-of-a-kind hiking experience. 

Prefer to explore in your Jeep or ATV rather than on foot? Christmas Valley Sand Dunes is where you want to be! This 11,000-acre area is managed by the BLM. Test your skills on the slippery sand rising 60 feet high. On the south side of the sand dunes, you can explore Fossil Lake, and on a lucky day, you could find the fossil of a dire wolf, mammoth, or giant beaver!
